Filipino Art |

|
Closing Party &
Concert |
 |
Just
having one last chance to take in the
amazing artwork during the exhibit is
reason enough to come to our closing
party this Saturday evening, Sept. 27
(7:15 pm to 9:30pm), at the Mercury
Cafe. But we've also put together a
concert featuring four of the hottest
young Filipino bands/performers in
Chicago today:
-
Imelda de la Cruz (www.imeldadelacruz.com)
Originally from New York City,
Imelda is a folk/pop
multi-instrumentalist that has made
Chicago her second home, playing for
neighborhood cafes, open mics and
well-known venues such as
Subterranean and the Metro. She
completed her first in-studio album,
"Noise Noise Noise" in August 2006
where she poured everything she had
into each song.
-
David Wycoco (www.davidwycoco.com)
David is a rock/pop solo
acoustic performer who often lends
his voice and skills to many events
that promote and celebrate
ethnicity, multiculturalism,
tolerance and good will throughout
the world around us not to mention
performing at clubs, bookstores,
coffee houses, open mics (the best
place to try new material), weddings
(because sometimes he’s romantic
like that), and the occasional kick
ass birthday party! His latest album
“Almost there and Nowhere Near It”
is born out of the experiences of
love, loss, redemption, and paying
homage to his Filipino-Canadian
background.
-
Paolo Escobar & the Prescription
(www.myspace.com/paolosongs)
Paolo Escobar (lead vocal/rhythm
guitar), Patrick Parrish (lead
guitar/backup vocal), Victor (bass),
Andrew Stone (drums/percussion).
Paolo Escobar is a soul/R&B acoustic
guitarist that enjoys mesmerizing
people with his funky percussive
musical style. With a list of
influences including Stevie Wonder,
Marc Broussard, Thelonious Monk,
Marvin Gaye and the late and great
Donny Hathaway, his music is sure to
bring a distinct flavor to any
scene. Aside from his music, Paolo
is also an illustrator, and stage
actor. He has worked with the R.Ed.I.
Arts Foundation, Hataw Pinoy
Chicago, and PINTIG/CIRCA. He met
the Prescription during a
performance at the Refuge Arts
Center in Skokie and is currently
working on new and exciting songs.
-

Je Cacnio (Vocals &
Percussions), Randy Maguigad (Vocals
& Percussion), Mike Querubin (Lead

collective of Filipino cultural
workers, activists, and musicians
who began writing and performing
original music in 1998 as a
contribution to the first annual
Kultural Night of Resistance
celebrating the centennial year of
Philippine Independence. Since then,
Bagwis has composed several dozen
pro-people songs and participates in
community building for our youth and
migrant workers. BAGWIS music
believes in THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE,
in seeking genuine freedom and
democracy in the Philippines and in
upholding human rights. In creating
& performing this kind of music,
BAGWIS hopes that it is contributing
its humble share and effort in the
overall struggle for justice and
social change.
