Manila-born Chicago area artist, Fred
DeAsis studied fine arts in Asia, Europe
and North America.
He manages
the popular traveling cultural art
exhibit - "Kut-kut: Lost Art of the
Philippines". The kut-kut technique is a
combination of ancient art processes
graffito, encaustic and layering. The
merging of these ancient techniques
produces an original art form
characterized by delicate, swirling and
interwoven lines, multi-layered texture
and an illusion of three-dimensional
space.
DeAsis is
the recipient of 2006 Fil-Am and 2007
Asian-American Hall of Fame awards for
outstanding achievement of an individual
in promoting arts and culture in North
America.
He is the
chairman of Asian American Arts And
Cultural Foundation and a director of
the Philippine American Cultural
Foundation. He also serves as an Art
Commissioner of Arlington Heights,
Illinois.
DeAsis
provides hands-on workshops and lectures
on the Philippines' lost ancient art to
high schools, universities and various
cultural organizations. Last June, he
conducted a well-acclaimed kut-kut art
workshop during the Philippine
Independence Day celebration at the
Chicago Children's Museum in Navy Pier,
Chicago.
The
cultural workshops and traveling exhibit
have been gathering kudos and great
appreciation from host communities
regarding knowledge gained on the
Philippines' lost ancient art.
DeAsis is
also widely known for his annual Free
Parol Workshops held in Chicago area
during the month of November. The Free
workshop is aimed to promote and
celebrate Philippine culture during the
Christmas season. This is his way of
"giving back" to the Philippines.
He is
currently writing a book on ancient
Asian arts and culture. For more
