In the
summer of 2003, Bren Bataclan began his
street art installation, “The Smile
Boston Project.” The project involves
the artist leaving his cartoon inspired
paintings for people to take for “free”
all over Boston (park benches, trains,
schools, malls, etc.).
Attached to each painting is a note
saying, “This painting is yours if your
promise to smile at random people more
often.” Bren has since gone worldwide
(see list below) with his “Smile Boston
Project” and he has begun to exhibit his
paintings across the country. Prior to
painting full time, Bren Taught computer
graphics and design at the University of
Massachusetts Amherst and at the Boston
Museum School. He also worked in a
design think tank lab in Boston and was
involved in the computer animation
industry in California.
Aside
from painting and leaving paintings
around the globe, Bren has also started
to paint murals around the city. Most
recently, Bren has completed a mural at
the Morse Institute Library in Natick.
He was also the recipient of a Fuller
Grant in 2007. This Grant was used for
the mural at the Washington School in
Lowell, MA. You can also find Bren’s
mural in Harvard Square, the JFK School
in Somerville and at Karmaloop’s office
in Boston.
Bren’s
artwork was exhibited at Boston’s Museum
of Fine Arts this year and in 2007. Also
in 2007, his documentary, “The Smile
Project,” was premiered at the Wood’s
Hole Film Festival--the film won “Best
Short Documentary.” This year, Gingko
Press will publish a book about Bren’s
street art project.
