In 1996, he graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Advertising. He was also a finalist in the Metrobank Annual Painting Competition and became a desktop Artist at Suara Design & Communication.

He was part of the Group Exhibition: “Banhay-Kulay” in June 1998 at the UP Vargas Museum. In 1999, he earned a 3rd Prize in the Metrobank Annual Painting Competition.

He has been in several group exhibitions since then, including the following: “Luna (Earth Day 2000)” in April 2000 at Quezon City Circle; “Summer” in April 2001 at Subic Bay; “Lunatech” (Digital Art) in July 2001 at Mayrics, España, Manila; “Sagitsit ng Lukob Haplos ng Pinsel” in August 2001 at Galeria de las Islas; “Unang Pahina (Digital Art) in June 2002 at Café Communidades; “La Musique” and “Madonna and Child” at Galerie Joaquin in 2003; “Pour L’ Amour” in February 2004 at Galerie Joaquin; “Ballet” and “Classical Music” at the Podium in 2003; “Harvest” in April 2004 at The Galerie Joaquin; “May Flower” in May 2004 at The Galerie Joaquin; “Flowers of May” in May 2004 at Kape Quesada (Paete, Laguna); “Private Limited” in December 2004 at Artesan Gallery (Singapore); and “Laguna Arist ” at Nineveh Artspace in 2007.

He was a founding member of the Guevarra Group of Artist in 2003 and had his first major solo show the same year: “La Pleine Lune” in October at Galerie Joaquin. In 2004, he presented his second solo exhibit, “Ligawan,” in at Galerie Joaquin (The Podium). In 2003, his solo exhibition, “Claro de Luna,” was presented at Nineveh Artspace. His most recent solo exhibits were last year at Bliss Cafe, Baguio City and Nineveh Artspace.

Acala focuses on women as protagonist in these well-delineated trysts and games of seduction. His women, however, are depicted as strong, independent-minded creatures who have no qualms being caught in these dalliances. In colorful, Gaugainesque tableaux, he delineates women as lusty, if libidinal, earth-bound, nocturnal nymphs who succeed in radiating a rare presence, for both their vulnerability and eroticism.

Acala often stages his mise-en-scene in the lush ambience of trysting places, the protagonists occasionally indulging in musical activities as a most welcome diversion. His paintings have evolved in time, as the artist wrests imminent control on his subject, infusing new perspectives and seriocomic touches in the process. Thanks to the exposure and the honing from Galerie Joaquin, Acala is well on his way to becoming one of the exciting emerging artists of his generation.
